| Blue (Blue Dog Public Option) over Gold (AU Guys), 15-7 | Gold graciously passed the Public Option on to the Senate of Soy in Monday's late session. A cool night with a light breeze welcomed the AU Guys and Blue Dog Public Option as SGIP snuffed out the Disc-O- Lantern in the early game. BDPO had a full roster while Gold was missing standout Emily Wenink Bratton due to a fractured foot and Matt "always shining" McGrievy was playing with an injured hand and clumsy brace. The Blue Dogs came prepared to face zone D and Captain "Matted Dog" Polly even brought a white board and sent out pre-game diagrams! The temperature may have helped the running Guys cup stay cool, but the lack of wind made working the disc a breeze for the Blue handlers like Pickle Dog, KoolJ Dog, Howlin' Dog and PaulyWog. Gold seemed a little heavy in the first half and close ones mostly went to Blue: 8-2 Dogs at the break. Gold started the second half with a run and pulled close using a combination of hard individual D, patient throwing and a few long hucks for scores; McGrievy's injury did not impair his deep laser down the line to Galen Bratton. But Blue had their good luck charms present in little Helena Damer and big Dave Vaughn; an upset was not to be. Spirit was very good despite intense play and tight coverage; nary a temper appeared to be lost. When the AU Guys surged, the Dogs hunkered down and turned it up. Among many notables, Matt Smith and Amy Smoker made great catches for big gains mid-field but resisted the urge to force it in; the dogs were patient this day. Grey Hubbard got the game disc for most frequent and most awesome Ds. Final score 15-7 Dogs over Dudes. Now Polly wants a green people cracker... (Randall Lanier) |

Blue (Blue Dog Public Option) over Black (Night Kitchen), 15-5 | The Blue Dogs got off to a great start playing the way the've played all year but only better: working the disc upfield with good handling and no hasty decisions. They started the game with a quick 7-1 run with the help of a couple of big catches in traffic by Chris Guidry. The point before halftime was the longest of the game by far. Black seemed to be in control for most of that point but couldn't punch it in. Blue takes half 8-1. The Blue Dogs continued controlling the rhythm and time of possession and got up 11-1. From there Black found some of their game and scored a couple of quick points and would've made more if not for some unlucky bounces. From 11-3 there was a simple trading of points until the final of 15-5. I noticed that there wasn't one argument or dispute in the whole game. Good spirit. (Tain Collins) Night Kitchen had a bad night with dropped throws, stymied cuts. Despite good spirit we could not keep up with the Blue Dogs. Among many dominating plays, what I remember best are Bradley Manton and Amy Lanier each scoring points that seemed to squeak (or slide) past the Black defense. Both teams had nearly full rosters. The Public Option carried the night. This was the scoring pattern: (BD = Blue, NK = Black) First Half -- NK pulls from woods end of field BD 1-2-3-4-5 | {NK time out} NK 1 | BD 6-7-{BD time out} 8 First Half -- BD pulls from woods BD 9-10 | NK 2 | BD 11 | NK 3 | BD 12-13-14 | NK 4-5 | BD 15 (Pat Inman) |
| Orange (Disc-O-Lantern) over Silver (Silver Bullit) 15-13 | It was a brisk night as the Silver Bullits lined up against the Disc-O-Lanterns. Both teams had their full squads tonight. Orange won the flip and started out on defense. A quick turn over was forced and Orange capitalized to score the first point of the game. Orange then forced another turn to go up 2 to 0. Silver then decided that was enough of that, and went on a run to tie it up at 2 to 2. Both teams played a little tidier and traded points up to 6 to 6. Then Silver went on another run to take the half at 8 to 6. Orange was down, but knew they would be receiving the pull to start the second half. The Disc-O-Lanterns dug deep and went on a run of their own. The score evened up at ten, then the Lanterns ratcheted it up to 13 to 10. Silver was not going to go down that easily and a marathon point ensued to bring the score to 14 to 12 with Orange still in the lead. Silver scored to close the Orange lead to only one point. Hard cap went on during the ensuing point and Orange scored to win the game. It was a very hard fought battle on both sides, with good spirit and no sketchy calls either way. A post game award was given to Evie for her take-no-prisoners sideline chatter. (John Stevens with addenda by Greg Tschoepe) |

Green (Soylent Green is People) over White (White Castle Krystal Sliders), 15-9 | SGIP played steadily, while the Sliders struggled, often unable to follow up spectacular throws and catches to score. Green had 15 players at the start of the game; White only had 10. Green was loose enough that although they fell a bunch on the slick ground, they caught several passes AFTER falling. White nearly came back from a 12-4 deficit to win. Green called a time out to calm down and then went on to victory before the soft cap. Jen See scored the game-winning point. This was the scoring pattern: (SG = Green, WC = White) First Half -- SG pulls from woods end of field SG 1-2-3-4 | WC 1 | {SG time out} SG 5 | WC 2 | SG 6 | WC 3 | SG 7-8 Second Half -- WC pulls from woods SG 9-10 | WC 4 | SG 11-12 | WC 5-6-7 | SG 13 | WC 8-9 | {SG time out} SG 14-15 (Pat Inman reporting) |
| Gold (AU Guys) upset Red (Sundried Killer Tomatoes), 15-7 | The 6th-seed AU Guys scored the only upset in the quarterfinals by vanquishing the 3rd seed Sundried Killer Tomatoes. Gold won because after the Tomatoes, all in warpaint, took a 2-0 lead, Gold settled down and controlled the pace, especially on O. Red had 15 players to start, Gold, 13. Gold played a really solid zone D, and Red had not faced zone all season. Red clumped in the middle, while Gold stretched the field longer. (White had made the same mistake earlier.) 40 minutes elapsed between Red's 4th and 5th points. Red's final point of the tourney was scored by Dina Gerber, who had been stretching Gold's zone long for several points, and who darted into just the right spot on a crowded line to catch the disc. This was the scoring pattern: (AU = Gold, KT = Red) First Half -- KT pulls from street end of field KT 1-2 | AU 1-2 | KT 3-4 | AU 3-4-5-6-7-8 Second Half -- AU pulls from street AU 9 (Callahan)-10-11 | KT 5 | AU 12-13-14 | KT 6-7 | AU 15 (Pat Inman) |

| 10/7 | Black (Night Kitchen) 15 - Silver (Silver Bullit) 13 | The two teams' captains emailed before the game to agree on subs--SIlver Bullit was missing 3 women and a couple of men and so had only about 12 team members present, and Night Kitchen was missing 3 women and 4 men to start and began with only 9 team members. By agreement, Silver picked up Red co-captain Sara Stahlman and Black picked up Red player Dan Divas. By the end of the night, more players showed for Black, so the teams ended up about even. The good spirit with which the substitutions were agreed on held throughout the whole game. The see-saw scores tell part of the story: 1st half: NK-1 | SB-1 | NK-2 | SB 2-3-4 | NK-3 | SB-5 | NK-4 | SB-6 | NK-5-6 | SB-7 | NK 7-8 2nd half to soft cap: SB-8-9 | NK-9 | SB 10-11 | NK-10-11-12-13 | SB 12-13 Soft cap: NK 14-15 There were many great plays. Many of the cuts that scored left a defender just a step behind the scorer or took advantage of a poach or a cut to the back of the endzone and then back to the corner. Silver Bullit played with discipline and control, Night Kitchen with a kind of looseness. Both teams scored on long throws, but Black did so more often, while Silver moved it down the field more often, at least in the first half. Night Kitchen fell behind after taking half, and our comeback seemed to involve moving the disc up the field more. Sub Dan Divas caught the final point. Thanks, Dan! (Pat Inman) |
| Gold (AU Guys) 14 - White (White Castle Krystal Sliders) 15 | What a game. Sorry if you missed it. It was probably one of the most exciting we've ever had. It finished as close as conceivably possible. At "hard cap" the game was 14-13----Krystal Sliders over AU Guys--- but the teams had to finish the point in play and in spite of the fact White had the disc they turned it over with Gold recovering and eventually scoring to tie the game. It was then true sudden death with 6 turnovers before White eventually scored the winning point. Gold had made an incredible comeback to force it into overtime. I believe they scored 3 (maybe 4) points in the soft cap to put themselves in a position to possibly win. It's just a reminder as Yogi Berra said it isn't over til its over and the Gold comeback was like deja vu all over again. (Mike Shea) |

| 10-5 | Orange (Disc-O-Lantern) 14 - Green (Soylent Green is People) 13 | With the score tied at 5, Disc-O-Lantern pulled to Soylent Green is People and played zone D. That point went on for 14 minutes thirty seconds, including several turnovers and a Green timeout. Several attempts at scoring were blocked or missed, but the general level of play was very high; Kathryn deKrafft finally scored the point the for Orange. Green had only a few subs while Orange had their whole team out. Judging by the score, after that long point, momentum began to shift, perhaps because Disc-O literally had more legs. Orange took the half 8-6, and then built their lead to 12-8 in the second half, including another ten-minute point. Then Soylent Green began to come back. At soft cap, the score was Orange 13, Green 11. Green scored twice more to tie the game 13-13. Partway through the next point, during an extended player discussion over dual violation--an expired stall count and an intervening foul--time expired and the official announced the Hard Cap. Under the League rules for a hard cap with a tie score, the winner of the point in progress wins the game. Orange scored the final point. (Reporting: Pat Inman) |
| Blue (Blue Dog Public Option) 12 - Red (Sundried Killer Tomatoes) 14 | Two reports: The Red/Blue game did not go as I expected tonight. Red, with a full team present and everyone playing well, came out hot in the first part of the game. Blue's scores were awesome grabs, but the Killer Tomatoes were getting two for every one of Blue's until 11-6. (Red even shelved their post-half strategy of having Mike turn off the lights and using the advantage of their glowing wristbands and flashflight frisbee to finish the game -- watch out for that in the tournament....) The Blue Dogs then unleashed the scoring drive that had kept them undefeated so far, but alas their comeback was too late. They brought the game to 12-14, including three unanswered at Red's game point, but the hard cap ended the game in Red's favor. Good play and good spirit all around, and the rain held off (until I started cycling back home in the dark). (Jack Snoeyink) The Killer Tomatoes sent the Blue Dogs yelping in a game that did not feel nearly as close as the final score. Maybe it was the 30 minute drills the Tomatoes ran while the Dogs lazily tossed around a bit and ran a 3 minute drill to warm up? Maybe it was that Blue Dog star handler and co-captain KJ was sidelined with a swollen knee from semis? Or maybe it was just the Tomatoes night to plaster the Blue Dogs red. Whatever it was, Red looked really good almost all night and Blue looked really sad almost all night; Red took half 8-5 and ran it up to 14-9 or so before Blue finally showed any real competitive spirit. After yet another unforced turnover by his team, Blue’s Grey Hubbard started laying out on every defensive play and it seemed to spark the Dogs to catch up. Alas, it was too little too late and hard cap went off prior to the last pull; official score 14-12 Red. Unofficial score 14-13 Red. (Randall Lanier) |

| 9-16 | Silver-Green (14 - 9) | Silver jumped out to an early lead against a green squad that was missing a handful of key players. Green mounted a strong second half comeback to bring the score to 9-11. In the end Silver prevailed 14-9. |
| Red 14 - White 13 | Red and White squared off for Wednesday's late game through scattered showers. Due to the conditions, turnovers ran amok and Red seemed to be making the most of their scoring opportunities. The drama didn't begin until Red called time-out three minutes before soft-cap with the score at 12-8. Although they were only 10 yards form the end-zone, a crafty defensive maneuver from White forced a Red turnover and lead to a marvelous rally that ended in the final 30 seconds before hard cap, White scoring the equalizer to make the score 13-13. Heartbreak was inevitable, and White saw the game slip away on the final play after some very disciplined passes from Red. Final score - Red 14: White 13. | |
| 9/14 | Blue 15 - Gold 11 | The Au Guys (think inorganic) took on the Blue Dog Public Options in a see-sawing heavy metal skills drill. After trading points to 4, Gold brilliantly took half 8-5 with effective zone play and sheer energy. During half-time the Blue Dogs ordered out for aqua regia and dissolved the Guys previously glittering defense to put on a 10-3 run for a final score of 15-11, sealed by a layout end zone score from Blue captain KJ. |
| Orange 15 - Black 11 | An aggressive Disco Lantern squad defeated the under-strength Black team (missing 3 women and 2 men) in a see-saw game. The two teams began by exchanging points. Then, with the score tied 4-4, Orange went on a 5-point streak to take half and then score the first point of the new half for a 9-4 lead. Then came the see-saw: Black scored twice, then Orange twice, Black three times, Orange twice, Black twice, and finally Orange scored twice more to win the game. Valerie Mason of White picked up for Black | 9/9 | Red-Green (9 - 15) | Green cruised past Red 15-9 in the early game on 9/9/09. Green pulled away early, establishing a 5 point lead in the first half. Red's offense started to flow better in the second half, but Green's early lead proved insurmountable. Green's spirit award went to Kate O'Brien, who just returned to ulty after many years' absence. She caught two of Green's scores, including the game winner. |
| Silver-White (9 - 15) | White beat Silver with the same score, 15-9. I watched the early points and concluded SIlver was playing a disciplined, solid game while White was playing a bit wild. Wild won! | |
| 9/2 | Black-Gold (13-15) | Gold beat Black in a 15-13 game that nearly went into the soft cap. Gold held the biggest lead, three points, at one point in the first half but Black tied the game up and the two teams traded points from then on until the last point. I believe the winning point was caught by Noah Becker for Gold. |
| Orange-Blue (8-15) |
