CARRBORO — It had all the makings of any great
championship game: A ceremonial coin toss, lead changes, on-field
arguments and, of course, a nail-biter of a finish. The championship of Carrboro Recreation and Park’s Fall Ultimate Frisbee League was settled Monday night at Henry Anderson Park, with the favorite, Team Sabotage, squeaking out a 13-12 victory over the fourth-seeded Dandelion Warriors to earn the title. “This team may not break the big plays like other squads, but we work hard and play as a whole. There are no weak players on this team,” Sabotage captain Evie Boswell-Vilt said. Sabotage comprises: Phillip Summers, Bryan Steffen, Tim Scheu, Wendy Richardson, Brent Perdue, Raphael Orenstein, Lori Milligan, co-captain Christopher Guidry, Bertille Antoine, Tab Combs, Ehren Hines, Howard Jacobson, Elizabeth Manly and Evan McDaniel. The league is self-policing, meaning no referees, but foul calls weren’t lacking with a championship on the line. “Unfortunately in high-importance games, people want to get technical and go into the rules on every call,” said Dandelion Warriors captain Dishon Cain. The only official on the field was scorekeeper Mike Shea. Shea, the Facilities Supervisor for Carrboro, has been at every game this fall season, and is never surprised by the aggressive play. “People come out to have fun, but they are also competitive, some more then others,” Shea said. Monday’s game went a little longer then most, but after a 12-12 stalemate, a winner had to be determined. “It was one of the hardest fought battles this season,” Cain said. After being down 8-4 at the half, Sabotage capitalized on turnovers to win the game. The Dandelion Warriors never trailed their counterparts until the some last-second heroics by Sabotage. “In Ultimate Frisbee, no lead is ever safe,” Cain said. Including Cain, there are 15 players on the Dandelion Warriors: Ben Brown, Patty Chang, Ryan Ellefsen, Jennifer Gilchrist, Miles Harmon, Joe Hendricks, Bill Jensen, David Kaminski, John Kitchens, Ellen Mitchell, Joshua Murphy, Justin Palmer, Amber Ratliff and Jimmy Schwankl. The winners will receive T-shirts commemorating their accomplishment, while the losing squad simply has to wait until next season — which isn’t far off. “There has been an increase in the interest around the Triangle. We now have fall, winter, spring and summer leagues running, and people are excited,” Boswell-Vilt said. What started out as a five-team league in 2003 has grown to accommodate eight teams this year, with no signs of impediment to more growth in the future.
